Scope 3: the emissions that don't come out of your chimney
For most organisations, the bulk of their emissions arise in the value chain: at suppliers, in transport, and while products are in use.

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol splits emissions into three scopes. Scope 1 is what you burn yourself, Scope 2 is the energy you buy, and Scope 3 is everything else in the value chain, from purchased materials to the end of your product's life.
Start with the biggest itemsNobody needs to calculate all fifteen Scope 3 categories perfectly in year one. A spend-based estimate quickly shows where most of the emissions sit, and that is where it pays to ask suppliers for better data.
An honest estimate beats waiting for perfect data.
Value chain emissions are a shared problem. When you work on reductions with your suppliers, they become better partners for their next customers too.
